DESCRIPTION:
Explore and bird the area north of the Jardine River accessible only by aircraft at this time of year. The Lockerbie Scrub is a recent rain forest established by birds depositing seed from PNG and further south. It is surrounded by drier eucalypt and paperbark forest. The rainforest is a refuge and stronghold for birds also found in New Guinea, but with a restricted distribution in Australia.
This tour is run in mid December to coincide with the arrival of the migratory birds from PNG and summer breeding events and gives you the best possible chance to view the beautiful Papuan Pitta whilst avoiding the crowds at Iron Range.

BIRD HIGHLIGHTS:
We search for the Papuan Pitta on their summer visit from PNG. Raucous Palm Cockatoo and the Magnificent Riflebird are also on the list as well as Marbled Frogmouth, Fawn-breasted Bowerbird, Frilled-necked Monarch, Trumpet Manucode, Northern Scrub-robin, White-faced Robin, Spotted Whistling-Duck, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Yellow-legged Flycatcher, White-streaked Honeyeater, Tawny-breasted Honeyeater, Tropical Scrubwren and many more. We will also take a half day boat trip to several uninhabited islands to see the Ashy-bellied and Yellow White-eye, Red-headed Honeyeater and Mangrove Robin using a specialist local guide.
